Kai
An undead warrior who steals the Chi of kung fu masters to build an army of jade soldiers.
General Kai is the primary antagonist introduced in Kung Fu Panda 3. He appears as an undead warrior who returns from the Spirit Realm to challenge the living world's masters. Unlike previous villains, Kai operates by stealing the Chi of other kung fu masters, turning them into jade soldiers that join his army. His arrival forces Po to confront a threat that cannot be defeated through physical strength alone, requiring Po to learn how to manipulate Chi himself.

Lore & Background
Kai's backstory is defined by his past rivalry with Grand Master Oogway. In the Spirit Realm, Kai sought to defeat Oogway and claim all the Chi in existence. When he attacks the Jade Palace in the mortal world, Shifu is turned into a jade soldier and becomes part of Kai's army. To stop him, Po travels to the Spirit Realm where he creates an army from the remaining giant pandas. This force allows Po to battle Kai directly. The conflict ends when Po destroys Kai in the Spirit Realm, returning Shifu and all other captured masters to normal.
In Their Own Story
The threat emerges when General Kai steals the Chi of kung fu masters across China, freezing them as jade statues. Upon learning of this, Po realizes he must master Chi to fight back. He reunites with his biological father, Li Shan, and together they gather an army from the remaining giant pandas. This group travels to the Spirit Realm to confront Kai. During the battle, Po uses his newfound mastery to counter Kai's power. The climax sees Po defeating the undead warrior in the Spirit Realm, which instantly restores Shifu and all other victims to their living forms.
Reader's Guide
General Kai is unique because he relies on Chi theft rather than traditional combat techniques. He can turn masters into jade soldiers simply by draining their life force. To defeat him, one must first understand how to use Chi for protection and offense. Po's journey involves learning from Li Shan and the pandas to create a counter-army. Key turning points include Po accepting his role as a teacher to the pandas and finally mastering the technique needed to destroy Kai.
